Open the Eyes of My Heart

Sunday’s Scripture –May 24, 2020

Ephesians 1:15-23, Luke 24: 44-53

Reflection

This is Ascension Sunday. At the end of Luke 24 is an account of this event. Before Jesus ascends, he reminds the group gathered there of all that had taken place. (It had been 40 days since the Resurrection, so a reminder was in order.) Verse 45 tells us that Jesus “opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.” Jesus connects the dots for them from Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms to His suffering, death, and resurrection. And then he says this:

“You are witnesses of these things.” (Luke 24:48)

To be a witness of something is to see it. Can you imagine being a witness to Jesus himself opening the Scriptures? Or to The Resurrection? Or to The Ascension?

What if we were? What if we are?

No, we weren’t physically, historically there. But if you are in Christ, a member of His Church, a part of His Body, then you are witnesses of these things. Luke 24:48 says so. You have encountered the Risen Christ. And God, in God’s Mercy, has revealed to you these things via His Holy Scriptures and the witness of the Church throughout time and space. We haven’t seen these things with our physical eyes. But we don’t need to because “the eyes of our heart have been enlightened.” (Ephesians 1:18). Praise be to God!

There were also those who physically witnessed the resurrection but did not believe. Perhaps seeing something with spiritual eyes not only counts but is better! Ephesians 1:17-19  tells us the benefits of having the eyes of our heart enlightened: we will know hope, the riches of his glorious inheritance, the immeasurable greatness of His power.

You, dear Christian, are witnesses of these things. And witnessing these things is cause for great joy, celebration, and worship. (Luke 24:52-53)

Continue to open the eyes of our heart, Lord. We want to see you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly. Amen.

Questions

  • Have you ever thought about having spiritual eyes? How is it the same as physically seeing something? How is it different (and even better)?
  • What is God revealing to you right now? What do you see with your spiritual eyes?
  • What do you need God to reveal to you right now? What is it you struggle to see with your spiritual eyes but would like to?
