Paul's letter to the Ephesians joins together what's been torn apart in our crazy world. He begins with an exuberant exploration of what Christians believe about God. Then, like a surgeon skillfully setting a fractured bone, he “sets” belief and behavior together so that these two aspects of faith can knit together and heal.
God doesn't hand out information to us. Doesn't explain. Doesn't condemn or excuse. The book that we call the Bible is not to be read and looked at and discussed. It's something to be lived, a message that gets us going. It's marching orders from God.
As we're not in the military, instead of “marching,” let's call it “walking.” Walk is what we do, the way we live. We don't just study God and think about God; we respond to God. The traditional word is “obey,” but not a Pavlovian obey: “sit,” “fetch,” “roll over.” We hear God speak our name and we respond personally by “walking” into the future God has in store.
