Sunday’s Scripture –May 17, 2020
Jesus’s words to his disciples in John 14 are part of what’s known as The Farewell Discourse– his parting words to the disciples before the crucifixion. They include lots of instructions and encouragement for what was about to happen, and long after.
In verses 15-21 of this chapter, Jesus promises his presence. But, not as he’s been present before, in his physical body. Instead, he will come as the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, the Spirit of Truth.
We’re still in the Easter Season, but soon we will celebrate Christ’s Ascension, and eventually Pentecost. These events are important because the Holy Spirit could not come down (Pentecost) until Jesus Christ went up (the Ascension).
It is by the Holy Spirit that Jesus is able to come to every follower of Christ throughout time and space. It is by the Holy Spirit that Jesus comes to us today.
In this passage from John 14, we see the Trinity (Tri-Unity) at work: Jesus unites us with the Father. The Father sends the Holy Spirit. The Spirit reveals to us Christ.
And Jesus tells us why: “I will love them and reveal myself to them.” -John 14:21
It is for love that the Holy Spirit comes to us, reveals Christ to us, remains with us. It is for love that the Holy Spirit is kept in our hearts.
Did you know God has a love language? No, it’s not words of affirmation, or acts of service. It’s not even quality time. God’s love language is obedience. The first part of John 14:21 says this:
“They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me…”
Christ loves us and so reveals himself to us by the Holy Spirit. We love Christ and so we keep His commandments.
How will you obey God’s command to love God and others today? You see, what God has asked us to do (love), he also empowers us to do. In one of his later epistles, this very same John would tell us: “We love because he first loved us.” – 1 John 4:19
- How often do you think about Christ being with your, personally, through the Holy Spirit? How could you increase your everyday awareness of this reality?
- How is the Holy Spirit revealing Christ to you today?
- How will you obey God’s command to love God and others today?
