For June Yellow Bag Ministry, we are going to support Aspen Point, which is an apartment complex, located near Holcomb Bridge and GA 400, that we’ve supported in past summers. The YMCA coordinates bringing the kids lunch (it is a food insecure community) and recreational activities. Last year we collected books for them; this year we are asking for books and recreation equipment. If you’d like to donate, the kids range in age from preschool to high school. We’d suggest trying to keep items the under $20 range, so that we don’t have too much trouble with kids squabbling over items. A list of suggested items would be:
- fiction or non-fiction books for kids ages 5-18
- sidewalk chalk
- jump ropes
- pogo sticks
- athletic balls, especially basketball and kickball, also whiffle ball
- corn hole
- stomp rockets
- nature scavenger hunt games
- kid binoculars
- kid’s nature guides.
Contact Jan ([email protected]) for how to drop these items off.
We will need items by the week of June 22, as we will be going each day to volunteer, and, ideally will have a few items to take each day. Also, we need volunteers June 22-26! Please reach out to Deborah Branscomb ([email protected] or 470-701-5573) if you are interested in helping that week. In years past, we met the leaders from the Y at the basketball courts, played with the kids for about an hour, and then distributed lunch. This year will involve social distancing, but we don’t have any more details at this point. It is a fun time with the kids and should be a safe way to volunteer during COVID-19.
