Honduras Day 6
Hola! It's Alex Ussery and Destiny Christie here! This week has been beyond fabulous and full of learning lessons. One of the big things we are taking away from this trip is that you don't have to speak the same language or have the same accent to communicate. Sometimes just smiling and laughing is all you need and to always be grateful for what you have. While an electric stove or running water might be basic to us, so many people don't even have that. Even lacking what we consider the norm, they almost always had a smile on their faces. It just proves you don't need an iPhone to be happy. So, to wrap it up, communication can be as simple as a smile.
Today, upon arriving in the village, two groups of workers, including Alex, Carla, Mama Goose, Rachel, Madison, and Powell, went to help put roofs on homes, and an additional work group, including Mary Beth and Destiny, went to help build another fire stove. Everybody else stayed and helped teach VBS. At VBS, we handed out hygiene packets which included soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste, and taught the kids how to wash their bodies and brush their teeth. After lunch, we walked up to the community soccer field and had a fiesta!! Playing games with all the kids was definitely a highlight of this week. We also sang songs with them and even had piñatas full of candy for the kids to hit! The people in the village, including the kids, surprised us all by having presents for all of us. The feeling we got when they gave us presents when our sole purpose of coming here was to help them was truly an amazing and indescribable feeling. Leaving the village this afternoon was really sad, but it's not a goodbye, it's just a "see you later" or hasta luego! This week has been a truly amazing experience that words cannot even begin to describe!! Adios mis amigos americanos!
